It's May!

April was okay. I guess pretty good. My first doll show went well and I sold several pieces, including some new pieces. After the show, the adrenaline rush crashed in a pretty bad way and I got a little depressed. Again, it was, now what? I did take a bit of time off to regroup and then life got in the way again. More hours at the job, taxes done, a good friend passed away, and I just continued to work on the new creative habits I started. I finally got my mini witches done three have already sold.

Now it's May and into the second quarter of the year. And got notice of another previous co-worker passed unexpectedly. Married for only about three years and had a six month old son. That kind of throws a whammy on you. Two sweet people have left this world way too soon. And I'm still struggling to get... something... together.

I have two new habits that are still going. After reading 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear, I liked how he said that it's not so much as how many days it takes to create a new habit but being consistent. And if you miss a day, get back to it as quickly as possible. Even if it's just for a short period of time. That way, does take the pressure off of working on something new. So I've been sketching more (it's been on the calendar on the refrigerator) and practicing hand sewing because I would like to make a Regency costume sewn by hand. I'm working out getting more consistent with my writing and I've started making hexies for some upcoming Halloween wall hangings. For my Regency wardrobe, I did find my chemise I made and my short stays that still fit. I will probably make another chemise with a lower cut neckline.

Hexies are a type of English Paper Piecing used to make quilts or appliques. I'm nuts and am doing very small ones. You get all of them made up and then sew them together.

I've also pre-washed fabric for a summer top I'm going to make. That way, I know things will fit.

And I'm ready to make more church lady aprons.

That's my update. I don't know if things will get to normal, whatever that is. I know what I like to do and what I want to do and what I get to do. Because we never know when our number is up. I found this quote from Roald Dahl (read a lot of his work):

"I began to realize how important it was
to be enthusiastic in life.
If you are interested in something, no matter what it is.
Go at it Full Speed.
Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all
Become Passionate about it.
Lukewarm is no good."

Patterns

Oh my gosh! I got these patterns that were on sale. I love Downton Abby, the Regency Era, and costumes, period clothing in general. On my list for the year is to start making me some items to wear. I didn't really play dress up when I was a kid but I want to do it now.

Workshops

I've been busy this past weekend and week. At least so far. Saturday and Sunday I took a Regency Spencer making workshop. I've fallen off the costume wagon and will eventually get my Regency wardrobe together. It will take some time but I'm stoked right now. I have made a short stay, chemise,  reticule, and now I almost have a Spencer. A friend had given me some leftover silk from one of her projects and this workshop came up. Voila! I still have to finish some opening seams, my sleeve treatment and the back treatment. Time to look for or make buttons and bows.

Yesterday, I took a needleturn applique workshop through the Forsyth Piecers and Quilters Guild. I got in at the last minute. The workshop was taught by Mary Sorensen and she was a hoot. Learned a lot and will be working on my sampler piece for awhile. I may have to just hand applique my Halloween Cat piece because at this point in time, I'm not feeling machine applique. There's just something about sitting in a chair and hand stitching.

I won't even say what's on my list for the rest of the week. I will do projects and post later. I've got writing to catch up on, more quilting, and maybe sketching. And I've got to do better than four posts for the month. Eegads!

Have a good day!

Hello 2014!

Four days into the New Year and I feel like I'm already behind.  Never fear, just take one day at a time. First I'll start with my Good Things Jar.  Remember that?  Take an empty jar, decorate it and when good things happen to you during the course of the year, write them down on slips of paper and put them in the jar.  On December 31, take them out and read them.  We always remember the bad things that happen to us, but rarely the good or nice or sentimental things.  Breakthroughs, accomplishments, etc.  Well, I did that for the whole year and read my slips of paper on New Year's Eve.  Some things I forgot had happened and I'm glad I wrote them down.  I've already started 2014 with 2 slips of paper.

I ended up with 47 slips of paper for the whole of 2013.  I won't share everything because some things are personal or you just wouldn't get it but I will give some highlights.

  • had an artist date at a local museum - saw Romare Bearden
  • first time experiencing torrential rains followed by thunder snow -yes, it snowed and thundered at the same time
  • got a costume consultant gig with Old Salem Museum and Gardens, another gig with Historic Bethania Center making bedding and window treatments for a historic room
  • learned how to knit socks
  • was present at the birth of my niece Zanna Joy
  • realized that my writing was becoming much better, clearer and tighter
  • participated in several doll/ornament swaps
  • did my first large painting, Day of the Dead Dancer, 24" x 36", in acrylic paint
  • had several commissions
  • took a soft sculpture workshop with Lisa Lichtenfels
  • have a figure on permanent display in the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem
  • got back to painting on a regular basis
  • received a beautiful Steampunk doll from Christine Shively
  • finished my Regency short stay
  • went to 2 book signings: Craig Johnson of the Longmire series and Lemony Snicket
  • went to my first fiber festival - SAFF Southeastern Animal & Fiber Fair
  • went to the Greensboro Aquarium, Zoo, and Science Center
  • completed NANOWRIMO with 51306 words
Not bad huh?  Plus all the other things I accomplished, I guess I had a pretty good year.  I'm really cutting myself some slack right now.  And it is difficult but I'm working on it.  There were times last year when I would beat myself up over not doing enough.  I could have done more but I get another chance this year.  Live in the present, enjoy the day.

I will not be writing resolutions.  Don't believe in those because I never stick to them.  I do believe in goals.  I have a general list, personal list, and creative list.  One of my goals this year is also on my Bucket List and that is to do plein air painting in a National Park.  This one isn't just any National Park but one that is also on the World Historic Registry.  Yosemite National Park.  I have a friend I haven't seen in years who will be doing an internship there for six months.  I will be going.  I've got a lot of work to do and things to sell.

Sorry I didn't write much at the end of last year.  I had two craft fairs in November along with NANO and a fair in December plus a last minute commission.  Won't be doing that again.

It's a new month and a new year and I have left the gate.

Hello August! (post dated)

I wrote this the day my laptop crashed, so I'm posting it today.

This is late.  I didn't do an end of the month blog (July) wrap-up because my computer was on the fritz.  If it's not one thing, it's another.  Life just keeps throwing things at me (pies, greasy piglets, engine blocks) just to keep me on my toes.  I couldn't believe it.  I tried to be positive after crying myself to sleep the night it decided it was going to mess with my mind.  I told myself that crap happens.  They call it life.

I decided to let it go.  August 1, I had to run errands.  That's a great way to suck the creative juices from you.  Got home and tried to reinstall Windows.  Nothing.  I had lunch and read a book.  Loamhedge by Brian Jacques.  One of my favorite authors and I've been blessed to have met him before he passed away.  He writes the Redwall series, and I still have a few more books in the series to read.

I worked on my Google+ introduction for when I get back on my laptop.  For the rest of the day I wrote and worked on a doll.  I'll also add some sketching.  Halloween is approaching and I've got to get busy.

What I accomplished last month (July):

  • Bless This House quilt top
  • six doll pins, one a special order
  • four short story rough drafts
  • Map Hunter II rough draft, finished two days ahead of schedule
  • finished my short stay for whenever I get to make a Regency gown
  • finished my blue dragonfly blouse
  • read two adult books, one kid book
  • one landscape painting
I did okay giving up TV for the month.  I fell off the truck four times but as the month went on, I didn't miss it.  I did get the weather in the morning before my walk and I watched Under the Dome every Monday night and Sunday Morning for three Sundays.  I think that's pretty good and I don't really need TV.  I will continue to listen to my music during the day and watch movies.  I plan on giving up sitting for so long at a time and do more stretching and drink more water for August.

For this month, and it will be a bit crazy, I will attempt:
  • finish one more quilt top
  • make another blouse for me
  • read three books
  • Map Hunter III rough draft
  • two short story rough drafts
  • finish my socks
  • goo gobs of Halloween stuff
  • a painting a week, does not include sketches or practice pieces, yeah that may be harsh but we'll see
  • finish my mermaid
I am off to do, something.  Hopefully my laptop can be saved.

Short Stay

I finally got my short stay done.  Finished.  Completed.  Now crossed off the list.  It had been almost a year since I started the thing.  My subconscious kept telling me not to finish it because I had no funds for a gown.  So I didn't do it.  But every time I was cleaning the studio, or looking for something else, or finding room for some other thing, there it was.  And in the way.  I didn't want it to get damaged (all the hard work I'd already done on it) and I didn't want to lose any parts.  So for the past two days I was working on it and got the thing done!  DONE!  I tells ya, done!  And it fits, even after my weight loss.  I tried it on over my chemise and I've got the silhouette of the Regency period down.  This one was from a commercial pattern and I would love to do one from a period pattern.  Later on that one.  But I now am ready for when I have funds for a gown.  My undergarments are now hanging in my closet and I feel loads better.

I'm Late, I'm late!

I know, I know. I'm late with a post. I was really trying keep up with my posts. My finger is much better but still aches late in the day/early evening. My kitchen sink had a leak, again. The faucet was finally replaced. Yay! I'm still hoping October will be good to me. It's only four days in but two of those days haven't been the greatest. I could use a break from all of these life tests.

I have been slugging it through though. As much as I would like to crawl under a blanket and sleep, I push myself to do something. Even with that, a blanket would be too hot because we're still warm and muggy here. So I take a deep breath and suck it up. I'm not giving up. I will be doing NANOWRIMO again this year. That's National Write A Novel in a Month. I'm prepping for that, along with two different doll related swaps online. It's my way of getting some pretty decent doll art without paying. They get a piece of my art too.

I've had to go back to the familiar, cloth dolls, because having been in the shop, times are still tight for a lot of people. I have to continue to make some inexpensive pieces to sell in order to be able to make the nicer pieces I want to make. People will spend up to about 30 bucks for something that isn't necessary. And that's here in my neck-of-the-woods and my experience. It's all good, as long as it helps to pay the bills. But starting next week, I will be doing my art pieces.

Here's my list for the month. It's long but it's my guide.
  • blog at least twice a week
  • put more cloth dolls on Etsy
  • restock dolls in shops
  • work on my kid story edit
  • sketch every other day, preferably new dolls
  • finish one commission
  • start items for Krankie's Holiday Craft Show
  • sew my pirate vest
  • finish my short stay
  • finish my last Hop To It quilt block
  • prepare for NANO
  • create website
I will copy and repost this at the end of the month to see what I got done. Yes, I'm a bit touched but that's okay. I like me.

Catching Up

It's been a rough summer and I'm glad it's ending this week. I'm so ready for fall. I don't do well with hot and humid temperatures and it makes me sluggish. Creativity was at an all time low. Now it's getting cooler and I am ready for that to be a bit more consistent too. I am working on projects that are almost done and finishing up others before starting new ones. It's like keeping my studio and apartment straightened to keep creative energy flowing properly.

My latest Bless This House block, #6. Done on time. Here's my quilt/applique list for the rest of the year.
  • complete all Bless This House  blocks
  • finish the last block of Hop To It from last year's quilt and put all blocks together
  • buy fabric and finish my flannel Trip Around the World throw
I'm also working on my latest batch of voodoo doll pins and I will show a pic of them in the next couple of days. I had started two zombie bunnies and they will get done by the end of the week.

I am going to be featured Artist of the Month at Olde Mill Eclective next month. I am the go-to person for Halloween. I am working on pieces for that too. Not a lot of little pieces but nicer one-of-a-kind pieces. Something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I have been sketching and now it's time to have those sketches become something 3D. And I'm almost done with my short stay. Eegads! I have a skellie pirate vest I want to make too. October 1, I pull out the Halloween stuff. Well... I have some of it out already but it will be time to bring it all out. Have a great week all!

Silly, Sassy, Sweet, Swamped September

Silly because I feel silly in a fun sort of way. Halloween and fall are coming and I'm so excited. I will decorate my apartment this year for that wonderful time of year, even if I have to make my decorations using drawing paper and crayons.

Sassy because I've been losing weight and toning up quite well and I'm starting to like the way I look in the mirror. I'm almost ready to get some new clothes. I will also continue making period and fantasy costumes.

Sweet because I'm being a little bit nicer to myself. I have just about everything that I need and I'm saving to get other things that I want.

Swamped because... well you guessed it, I've got a lot to do. I have a month to get more Halloween items done and then Christmas is coming up too. They kind of go hand-in-hand. There's a Regency Ball coming up I want to go to and I need to get a gown done. I have one quilt block left to do and I'll have a quilt top done. That was on my list for the year. Planning shows and more product for next year. Next year! Four months away! Yikes! And the book. Map Hunter. I've got to get that final edit done. It's time for that. I know there are a lot of little girls who would love to read this, and big girls and boys of all ages. As soon as I upload pics of the opening of Olde Mill Eclective, I will post them. When I got home yesterday from the opening, which was a success, I almost fell asleep eating. I was about to crawl into bed a little after 6:30 PM and everyone decided to call me. Seriously? It was all good.

That's the skinny of it for right now. I've got to get busy today and work on my lists and I will report back directly so you can see the list. Massive, simple massive it will be. Have a wonderful holiday, stay safe and make your September a Stellar one.

Works in Progress

I've been working on my short stay and it's coming along quit nicely.

Next I'll make the eyelets, boning, and bias tape all around to finish.

These are mini plush monsters I designed and cut out. The face parts will get sewn on and then the rest of the face will be embroidered. I'm making these for the Olde Mill Eclective shoppe.

Here are the majority of my pieces for my next Bless This House block #6. Lots of pieces. Today is going to be a busy day as I have to continue to prepare things for the new shop. I have to make price tags for my items. I will also be getting back to dollies/figures today. My paper clay folks need ears.

Short Stay in Progress

My short stay is on it's way to being put together. I have the gussets in place which will then get basted in before stitching on the machine. My goal is to have this put together by Sunday.

Short Stay

I'm finally getting around to my short stay. Can't have the silhouette of the Regency/Empire/Federal period without it. Plus, it's all part of my Regency Wardrobe Challenge. I did a mock up to see if it would fit and it did. Now I've cut out the proper fabric.

I will start sewing tomorrow. A good friend has let me use her bonnet pattern. One she designed herself. I think I will design my ballgown. October is coming up fast.

It's August!

Happy August everyone. Yes, this year is speeding along like a bullet  train on rocket fuel. It's been two months since I left employment and I have great things in store for this month. Halloween is coming and I'm working in a new medium. Securely back in the creative saddle until the next pothole in the road. I did well last month. Not so much with my manuscript but there is this month.

I have the greatest friends who are there when I want to ball my eyes out because the world and the universe don't want to play fair on the playground. My good friend Sherry in New Mexico told me how talented and awesome I was and that I could do this. Just what I needed. A shot in the arm.

I ended last month by starting figures with a new medium. Creative Paper Clay is what I'm using right now. I've used it before in the past but never gave myself a chance to really get to know it. Some people like it, some don't but for me, right now, it's what I'm using because it's what I have. My pieces are turning out better than I expected. Photographing white pieces doesn't seem to work well with my camera but here's the beginning of my two guys.

They are going to be undead types. After all, Halloween is coming. Yay! They do have their bodies and I'm working on their limbs. It's been a challenge to figure out how I want to joint them. No cloth bodies. Scary. They are going to be a good size and I think I will make smaller ones that will be stationary on a stand or as ornaments. I also have to work on other ornaments. I will have more pics of these guys on Sunday.

I made myself get up and go for a walk in syrupy conditions. I am so looking forward to fall. Even though I was born in the summer, I am not a summer baby. I'm glad I can see that the days are getting shorter. My morning was pretty good. After the walk and breakfast, I edited another chapter of my adventure manuscript and wrote new material, 600 words. My goal is 500 a day. I didn't stop to think, I had lunch and went right into the next project. I sketched a doll. Forgot to take a picture but will get it to you soon. Then I sewed a mock-up of my short stay for my Regency Challenge. I'm so glad I did because the cup size that I used is too big. Imagine that.

The front part is where the eyes will go for lacing and there will be a little bit of boning. You can just see the little wedge panels (which will be smaller). The arm hole fit, as well as the back. I was quite pleased when I tried it over my chemise. I am going to eventually make another one of a finer fabric and make the front part a little lower. The one I have now will be great for a day dress and not showing cleavage.

I still have some appliqueing to do and get back to my figures. Thanks for stopping by.

Wonderful Wednesday and a Doll

Hello! It's a glorious Wednesday and it's raining. Yay! Still gotta work on the humidity but it's a lot more comfortable in my apartment and studio. I may be able to be in my studio a lot longer today. That is so fantastic. I'm doing better at enjoying each moment of my day. I'm also getting better at enjoying what I do each day instead of what I didn't get to on the list that can go around the world. I now giggle when I think about what I've accomplished for the day. It's pretty awesome. That feeling of being in the moment.

Okay, today is going to be busy because tomorrow I'm going to a museum and movie with the gal pals. This will be one of the long days I'd been talking about. Remember? Have one or two knockout, creatively killer days during the week. Or at least one. I think this will be it.
  • I've got to work on an applique block. Getting behind again.
  • Work on another Moli Doll, they seem to be happening right now after being unfinished for over a year.
  • Post a blog, which I'm doing.
  • Work on my short stay. I can't make the real thing until the mock up is done. Can't make a Jane Austen gown until I have a short stay.
  • Continue on my latest collection of voodoo doll pins. Ran out of buttons and was going to go to the store today but patterns are on sale next week at JoAnn's, so I guess I'll wait. I will work on their skirts and red hearts today.
  • Get my 500 words in.
  • Play with some clay.
Yeah, sure. I'll check back in with you on that list. Ha, ha, ha! But I'm feeling quite happy and I'm ready to get going. Right after breakfast. Have a wonderful day all!!!!

Works in progress

I have a craft fair coming up in three weeks. I'm making easy things and things that aren't very expensive. It's summer time and people are on vacation. I get that. Enjoy the family and kids. I was about to lose my mind about what to make and Maya suggested I turn my angels into faeries. Now why didn't I think of that? I'll keep the angels for the winter holiday. I will make a few more voodoo doll pins, fish ornaments, some alien plushies, and a couple of hand puppets.

I'm back to having fun after a small disappointment yesterday when some kid's camp classes were canceled because of lack of interest. It was a small blow but I rallied back and told myself to keep going. I didn't break down and fall into a pit of despair like I could've done, I made faerie skirts, and cut out my next Regency project.

I will have 20 of these little ladies.

I'm making a mock up of my short stay. A friend was kind enough to let me use her pattern. Unfortunately, she's smaller than I am, so I've altered it a bit. Yeah, it's larger. I want to make sure it will fit before I make it out of the good fabric. This should be fun.

Life happens and I told myself that I will make dolls. Halloween is coming up and I have to keep going. Then later this morning I got a call from another place where I can teach classes. These would be scheduled for the fall but the kids will be back in school and gifts will need to be made. Handmade holiday gifts can be awesome. As a matter-of-fact, I should start my own. A friend has also told me that she is expecting. I get to make a baby quilt, and toys, and dolls, and bears, and stuff.

I like how I have this 'not giving up' attitude. That's not what the next 10 years are going to be about. I'm a creative crazy person and that's cool! Have a wonderful Independence Day all.

First Reticule

I forgot to show my first reticule. I made the tassel and I like the embroidery but I'm looking forward to making my next one and properly embroider the piece before the bag is put together.

A Project Done

Hello there. Yes, I missed two posts and I apologize. Still working out the kinks of being self employed. Managing the fear a little bit better and it's wonderful having a friend who keeps me on track. Maya was the second friend I made when I moved to North Carolina. She believes in me, my talent, and what I can accomplish. She's a wonderful writer and she really helps with seeing things above, around, and under my box. I'm still working on saying and enjoying what I have done each day, instead of what I haven't done with my artwork. That is a challenge.

I have been keeping track of my creative hours and for the past three weeks I've averaged 40 hours each week. I was shocked, yet pleased. I have proven to myself that I can put the hours in. Now I will work on using my creative time to accomplish what I really want to do, which is editing my manuscript and making one-of-a-kind figures for sell, along with continuing my other creative fun. I do want to do one more hand puppet and start pitching it for summer workshops for kids. I'll get started on that one today. But first...

I finished my chemise for the Jane Austen Regency Wardrobe Challenge. I hung it on a hanger to take a pic and then told myself to go ahead and try it on. Silly me, of course I should try it on. When I bought the fabric it was quite light weight but then I washed it and the weave tightened. Because of budget constraints, I had to go ahead and make it. There's nothing saying I can't make another with really nice batiste, nicer grade muslin, or fine linen. I tried it on and oh my gosh! It's so comfortable and would make a wonderful house dress for the summer. It was very airy and soft. I've got to make one just to wear around the apartment. Here it is, minus me.

Moving Along

The mind is a tricky thing. Seeing that my weeks don't actually have a beginning and an end, I thought that this week I'd start it on a Monday and see how that goes. Monday was a good day. A very productive day of quilts and applique which ended with going to my applique workshop. I love those ladies, they are hilarious. I know that once a month I'll get to see them and the awesome work that they do and we go crazy. Plus, it's good to get out of the apartment.

Tuesday morning, I got up and went for my walk. I'm still waiting to feel good about it but anyway... I got home, showered, ate and had coffee. I was feeling great. Then the brain decided to do a U-turn and wanted to take me for a ride. It was trying to tell me that I had a good day on Monday and that I didn't need to do anything today. My to do list is at least ten miles long, I chose three things to do. Edit chapter two of Map Hunter, work on my reticule, and cut out my chemise. Bad Wendy continued to plant seeds of despair and I was about to take an emotional dive when I said "No. I want to have several good days in a row. Beat it." But doubts started to sneak in and right when I was about to paralyze myself with fear, Good Wendy screamed, "DO SOMETHING!!!!!!". So I picked up my quilt block and finished appliqueing it.

One more block done and one more to go before I can put all blocks together. I'm on my way to one of my goals of finishing an UFP (unfinished project). Then I cut out my chemise. Yay me!

I just love having my table cleared off to do whatever but the floor and surrounding area is another thing.
I also edited chapter two of Map Hunter, my mid-grade kid adventure series. And...

I embroidered my reticule. I had drawn another design but because the bag was already together, an elaborate design wouldn't work. This one turned out quite well considering I worked in a very tight area. I even made my tassel. I want to continue to work on my schedule for each day. Eventually I will get to dolls. Being creative during the day is helping. I'm getting there. And I feel pretty good about it.

Sketches

I haven't exactly been able to follow along with the Sketchbook Challenge but yesterday I gave it a try. A friend of mine is trying to keep up her sketching in between semesters and I told her I'd join her. So she chose elephants. I thought I had pics of elephants but none could be found in my apartment. I just got lucky to find a video on Facebook and I sketched from that.

The next sketch is for my reticule. The next time I make one, I will embroider first and then put the bag together. But I had taken a workshop for it, that's why things are being done in a backwards way.

Now to transfer this onto the bad. Hmmm... I may have to free hand it.

Double Barreled Saturday

Sorry this is late but I will do this in two parts.
Part One- I have friends who have a catering business called Butt Brothers BBQ and they had a gig at the Pottery Festival at Old Salem in Winston-Salem, NC. I helped and it was a lot of fun. They will be there at Old Salem again this Saturday for a BMW classic car festival. Please stop by if you're in town.

In the back from left to right: Joel is hiding, Gary. Front row going in the same direction: Rebe, me, Maya, Amanda, and Dennis.

The Butt Brothers BBQ banner.

Everything, including three sauces were homemade. Baked Beans, coleslaw, brisket, and pulled pork were gluten free. The mac 'n cheese was not gluten free but darn good. Several different cheeses were used and then cooked in the smoker.

A view of the Pottery Festival.

It was a great day. It wasn't muggy and there was a nice breeze all day long.

Part Two - After I left Old Salem, I hiked to my car and went home. I took a shower, had to ice my knee, and took a quick nap. Then I got ready for my English Country Dance group's frolic. It took place at Bethabara which is another old settlement in the area.

I won't be able to remember everyone's names but I'll give it a go. Jennifer, Lisa, and Rita on the far right. She's the one who put everything together. Thanks Rita.

I didn't get this lovely young lady's name but her she is with her mother. She is 15 and is all into Jane Austen and the Regency period. Down to the mannerisms for a young lady. A gentleman was trying to take her picture during the break and she didn't want one taken. So she whipped out her fan and put it in front of her face and started fanning. It was great. I could pick her up and plop her down in any of the Jane Austen movies. She reminded me of Darcy's sister in the BBC version of Pride And Prejudice. Her mom told me that she made both their gowns, and that it took forever to do their hair. What an extraordinary young person. And talented.
